With over 65 years combined experience in nursing and healthcare, professors Sophie Mogotlane and Olive Shisana founded Bronberg Nurse Education and Training Academy with a vision to create an industry-leading nursing programme to equip nurses with essential skills and know-how to provide quality care with integrity and respect to their patients, co-workers, and the community.
Prof Sophie Mogotlane, PhD
Professor Sophie Mogotlane holds a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of KwaZulu-Natal and a Master’s degree in Nursing from the University of South Africa (UNISA). She was head of the nursing departments (Department of Health Studies) at UNISA from 2003 to 2008 and the Medical University of Southern Africa (MEDUNSA) from 1993 to 2002, where she established the Honours, Masters, and Doctoral nursing degrees. She was also a teacher and founder of the Paediatric Nursing Program at the King Edward VIII Hospital Nursing College in Durban.
Olive Shisana, Sc.D, Prof (Hon), UCT
Dr Shisana is an Honorary Professor at the Psychiatry and Mental Health Department of the University of Cape Town. She holds a Doctor of Science degree from Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health and was awarded a Doctor of Laws honoris causa by Monash University in 2014. Dr Shisana served as the first Director-General for the Department of Health in a post-apartheid South Africa and later as Executive Director at the World Health Organization, directing programs for child health, HIV/AIDS, reproductive health, and women’s health. She served as CEO of South Africa’s Human Sciences Research Council for 10 years, the first woman to do so. Before that, she was the founder and the first Executive Director of Social Aspects of HIV/AIDS and Health (SAHA) and the Social Aspects of HIV/AIDS Research Alliance (SAHARA) in 2002.
